The United States Capitol is also referred to as the Capitol Building. It is a major icon of the United States government in Washington, D.C. Home to the U.S. Congress, the building is considered the seat of the legislative branch of the federal government, much like the White House is the seat of the executive branch of government. Interestingly, the building is the origin point for the street numbering system in the District of Columbia.

The original Capitol Building was constructed in 1800, although it was expanded, including adding the iconic dome to the building. Tours of the Capitol Building are free but are only available on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can schedule your tour in advance, which is highly recommended, especially if you’re traveling during a busy season, such as the spring. You can book your tour through your Congressman or by scheduling through the online reservation system.
