The National Mall is a large park system located between the Lincoln Memorial to the west and the United States Capitol grounds to the east. A part of the U.S. National Parks System, the National Mall is home to numerous memorials and museums. The Smithsonian Museums surround the National Mall, and visitors come from all over to take in the views, which includes the large, rectangular Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Many events over the years have been held on the National Mall, and everyone from school groups to joggers can be found on its paths during the year. The Million Man March was held here during 1995. In addition to the historic structures, visitors also come the area for its natural beauty. The nearby Tidal Basin reservoir is surrounded by cherry trees that blossom every year. The National Mall is free to visit, and while you’re there, make sure you take in some of Washington, D.C.’s other attractions.
