Author Walter Scott, who wrote many classic works including Ivanhoe is a Scottish national treasure. Lots of visitors to Edinburgh will see The Scott monument, few will take the time to experience it. This is a massive shame because exploring this unique gothic structure is a truly incredible experience. Weather-beaten and intricate, the Scott Monument sits on the south side of Princes Street. This tourist attraction has stood proudly overlooking the city since 1832 and offers unparalleled views across Edinburgh. A guided tour is well worth your time as you will experience the monument in a whole new light. Make sure to climb the tight and giddy spiral staircases and marvel at the intricate figures carved out of the sandstone along the way. A climb to the top is not for the faint-hearted but, the spectacular views are a just reward to the brave adventurers who ascend the 287 steps of the narrow staircase.
