São Jorge castle (Castelo de S. Jorge) is majestically perched atop a hill in the lively district of Alfama. Offering unrivaled views over the entire city, looking out to the ocean, a hike up to the castle is worth it for that reason alone. The castle draws a huge number of tourists due to its pristine aesthetic – which we can attribute to reformation works carried out in the 1940s – and isn’t just a great place to take in the city from above. Inside the old fortification you’ll find an array of battlements, a fascinating museum, and a dark room which provides a unique perspective of Lisbon. A Roman-built defensive structure, São Jorge castle has endured through many civilizations, and adopted different elements with the passage of time. One of the most impressive aspects of this castle is the fact that it was damaged severely by a bout of earthquakes during the 16th and 18th centuries, but stands today as if it were never affected. This is due to the major restoration works that were implemented in the first half of the 20th century.
